For those curious about technology being used for our project:
We log our trekking using a Delorme PN-20 handheld GPS receiver.
- Pros: impressive graphics capability, can display TopoUSA maps, scanned USGS quads, or satellite or aerial imagery
- Cons: fairly expensive (~$370), satellite and aerial imagery not-so-useful for our purposes, purchasing map imagery gets expensive, some device features could be better
We are communicating in the field using a pair of Motorola Talkabout T6500 FRS/GMRS radios.
- Pros: inexpensive, light, fairly easy to use, battery flexibility (alkaline, NiMH, included pack), receives NOAA weather broadcasts
- Cons: range limited in really rugged terrain
